From Paradise to War
Nouvelle-calédonie 1ere et France 3 / 2018
Co-Real/Chef op' 52' - Latitude 21 prod
From Paradise to War follows the journey of young Kanak soldiers at different stages of their military careers. Jacob, 18 years old, leaves his native island of Lifou for the Brive-la-Gaillarde barracks in mainland France. Ernest, 30 years old, finds himself in the midst of an overseas operation in Chad. Joseph, 40 years old, returns to the Isle of Pines after 20 years of service to reconnect with his clan and traditions. What drives these young individuals to risk their lives in distant regions? How do they perceive their relationship with "French homeland"? The journey of these young soldiers offers a sensitive and human portrait of three young Kanak individuals. It also challenges stereotypes about Pacific Islanders and the military.
